Master and Disciple on the Frontier is the first chapter of the Cannon Master manga series.
Plot
Chapter 1 starts off with the Slaylith, Bharat, coming back from defeating a regilith. Bharat came back to his village, Hysheera, a small village to the west. As soon as Bharat came back, villagers thanked him for saving them from peril and allowing them to hunt in the northern desert, and Bharat responded by saying he is just a slaylith and he was just fulfulling his duty. Ur, Bharat's apprentice, asked him why he was so humble, and went on to list all of the great things Bharat did for the village & villagers. A villager told Bharat that tomorrow they are holding their traditional boulder-smashing contest to see who can split the largest rock, and they want Bharat to show them a demonstration before the big event. Bharat at first says he's not the one to show off, but Ur asks him to do it, and he eventually complies. After Bharat set a new record, Ur went up and smashed the boulder. Ur set a completely new record. It is then revealed that Bharat & Ur are a master and apprentice duo, but instead of Bharat being the stronger one, Ur is. Bharat found Ur during the Great War, and since Ur had no family, Bharat took Ur in as a apprentice and gave him a name. Bharat became a slaylith right after the war ended, and chose Hysheera as his base to find work within his capabilities, but all that was possible because of Ur. Bharat is confused as to why Ur's role model is him, but he talked and built up Ur's expectations, so, Bharat's goal is to strive to become a master worthy of Ur's respect no matter what it takes. After breaking the boulders, Bharat and Ur go to training. Bharat tells Ur to go through a special training regiment using a ballon. Ur asks if all he has to do is inflate it and Bharat nods. Ur instantly inflates it and even makes it burst, and Bharat is shocked yet again at how powerful Ur is. Ur asks Bharat if he thinks his daily basic training is finally paying off, and Ur explains that he's been doing push ups, sit ups, back exercises for 10,000 reps, runs 125 miles every day, and studies 30 languages. Ur says thats he's even learning how to bake. Bharat is shocked again, but he remebered that he did tell Ur to learn how to bake because it might come in handy someday. Ur asks Bharat if he could learn real fighting moves from now on, but Bharat says he's strong but not strong enough to pass on the secret arts. Ur, after getting rejected for the 357th time, goes running. While Ur went on a run, Bharat starts doing his own training to catch up to Ur, even if it's a little in comparison to Ur's training. Bharat finishes his training, and he's tired, but suddenly Ur comes & tells Bharat that he'll give up on being Bharat's apprentice and will pursue baking instead. Ur says it's been 5 years but he hasn't learned a single move from Bharat and he always known that he has no talent. Ur adds that he's been thinking of developing his favorite hobby into something more. Bharat asks if Ur is that serious about baking, and Ur responds by giving Bharat bread that he baked. Bharat tries consoling Ur and saying that he has alot of potential but Ur says he has a new dream now and Ur wants to spread the word of Bharat through opening up bakeries throughout the land. While Ur and Bharat were talking, a villager came and interrupted them by saying a Regilith has appeared & that it's headed straight for the village. Bharat says that must be the regilith that leveled a nearby village, and it's a midsize regilith threat level 2. Regiliths attack people and replenish their energy through human flesh and blood. Regiliths' size and number of weapons determine where on the five-level threat scale they fall & anything above threat 2 requires multiple slayliths to handle them. Bharat says that midsize level 2 regilith already took over 40 lives and it must be supercharged from all the magic it's absorbed. Bharat uses his ability Weapon of Wind, but it barely damages the religith, so Bharat asks Ur to help him defeat the religith, but Ur refuses because he can't control his powers, and thinks he'll just get in the way. Bharat goes straight to the regilith with his ability, Weapon of Wind Magic Cloth, and Ur says to the villagers that Bharat is a survivor of the Wind clan, who control the air through magic, and he controls the winds by using tools passed down in his family. Bharat keeps fighting the regilith, but the regilith has a magical barrier, which can only be obtained after consuming a large volume of magic. The Magical Barrier acts as a protective armor that reduces the effect of most magical attacks. The Regilith blasts something towards the village, and Bharat blocks it infront of Ur & the villagers. Ur asks Bharat if there's anything he wants to do, but Bharat says do whatever you want to do and that he still hasn't earned the right to worry about Bharat. Bharat says that he's here and he'll defeat any moster that comes towards them. Bharat goes back to where the religith is and Ur joins in. Ur punches the religith several times, and makes it go flying away. Ur says that he remembered after seeing Bharat fight that he wants to become someone strong enough to protect others like Bharat. Ur adds that back when he was surrounded by religiths and didn't know what to do, Bharat risked it all just to protect him, just as he is doing right now. Ur apologizes for being selfish to Bharat and asks Bharat to train him again. They are interrupted when the religith comes back and starts attacking them. Ur picks up the magic flute Bharat dropped and says he thinks he can use it now. Ur uses the magic flute, Song of Wind Twister, and completely destroys the religith & its' magical barrier. Bharat is confused as to how Ur pierced the barrier, and that you would need a special attack, one on the same level as Religith's cannon, to physically break the barrier. Bharat then came to a realization that Ur rivals Religith's destructive powers. Chapter 1 ends with Bharat telling Ur that he just used a secret move that Bharat had Ur training for without Ur realizing. Ur is excited, and Bharat says they'll get back to training tomorrow.
